“rapture/rupture” at EXPLODE! Queer Dance, NYC (23 Jun 2017)

It was an honor to be in loving community with queer badass artists at EXPLODE! Queer Dance, curated by the extraordinary Clare Croft.  I performed “rapture/rupture” with my favorite art-wife and partner-in-crime, Shyamala Moorty, at JACK as well as shooting theoretical shit at the book launch of Queer Dance: Meanings and Makings at Oxford University Press, and participating in a public artist conversation at NYU.

Directed by Shyamala Moorty with dramaturgy by Sandra Chatterjee and music by Ravindra Deo, “rapture/rupture” is a contemporary abhinaya work that reinterprets the intimate and bittersweet rapture of poetic love-in-separation through cultural and gendered difference.  EXPLODE! queer dance is a festival of performances and conversation, curated by dance scholar Clare Croft, that re-imagines the potential of queer dance today. Featuring a range of forms including South Asian dance, improvisation, Irish step dancing, and drag the festival showcases artists from across the U.S. and around the world, including Jennifer Monson, DD Dorvillier, Thomas DeFrantz, Jennifer Harge, Nic Gareiss & Cleek Schrey and Post Natyam Ensemble. The evenings at JACK will be hosted by the fierce and beautiful Boston-based desi drag queen LaWhore Vagistan.

Wed June 21, noon, Oxford University Press lobby: author talk and book launch of Queer Dance

Here’s a great review of Queer Dance and preview of EXPLODE! by Elizabeth Zimmer in the Village Voice, and a lovely NY Times review of the Saturday show.
