Playful and abstract, this improvisational quartet investigates resonances between (1) the spatial geometry and ang (body lines) of Indian classical dance and (2) improvisational structures drawn from American postmodern dance. The compositional structure of rubix is inspired by Carol McDowell’s surrender (2009), which in turn draws on Trisha Brown’s cube score from Locus (1975) and Barbara Dilley’s grid score. It also draws choreographic inspiration from Richard Schechner’s Rasaboxes and Joel Smith. Commissioned by Maya Dance Theatre (Singapore). |
