Counting the Moons (2006)

Love, loss, and the slippery relationships between self, friend, and lover emerge in this contemporary take on abhinaya (emotional expression). A collaborative creation rooted in and moving between the choreographers’ backgrounds in Bharatanatyam and Kathak, this duet is loosely inspired by a 17th century Telugu poem by Ksetrayya.

“I wore myself out watching the road.
Counting the moons, I grieved,
Holding back a love I could not hold…”
-Ksetrayya

choreography and performance: Cynthia Ling Lee and Anusha Kedhar
original music: Gregory Acker (flute) and Robert Levit (electric guitar)
