Compromised Interpretation (2009)
This site-specific, room-sized installation integrates Taiwanese visual artist YaYa Chou’s sculptural work with dance by Cynthia Ling Lee and Shyamala Moorty. Chou’s sculptures, created from her mother’s discarded Chinese calligraphy studies, form spheres in various sizes through which the dancers weave in and out. The contemporary Indian dance vocabulary is set to original music by Loren Nerell and draws inspiration from the visuals of the Chinese calligraphy, the philosophy of the Buddhist Heart Sutra, and traditional ideas about marriage held by the artist’s mother.
